April 3, 2008: National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) awards $1.2 million to the joint research by Prof.s Ron Li and Alper Yilmaz of OSU, Charles Oman of MIT, and Marty Banks of UC Berkeley. The research concerns the safety of the astronauts in future Lunar missions.

BRIEF BIO

Dr. Alper Yilmaz is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Eng. and Geodetic Science at the Ohio State University since 2006. He earned Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida, Orlando in 2004 and 2001 respectively, and M.E. in Computer Engineering from the Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul in 1999. He received B.Sc. in Computer Science and Eng. in 1997 with highest honors and was ranked the first place including all disciplines at the Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul. Dr. Yilmaz's areas of expertise are generation of computational models for video understanding, object segmentation, behavior analysis, action recognition, single camera and multi-camera object tracking, and face recognition. He has received the Turkish Informatics Foundation High Academic Performance Award in 1999 given annually to a single researcher, two graduate merit fellowships from the Univ. of Central Florida in 2000 and 2001, and a Hillman Award for excellence in PhD research from the Univ. of Central Florida in 2003. He is a member of IEEE, ACM and IAPR. He is serving as an associate editor for the Machine Vision and Applications journal. Dr. Yilmaz is a committee member of the IEEE Workshop on Motion and Video Computing, IEEE Conf. on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and IEEE International Conf. on Computer Vision (ICCV).
